Meso-zooplankton structure and functioning in the western tropical. South Pacific along the 20° parallel south during the OUTPACE survey (February-April 2015) ArchiMer
Carlotti, François; Pagano, Marc; Guilloux, Loïc; Donoso, Katty; Valdés, Valentina; Grosso, Olivier; Hunt, Brian P. V..
This paper presents results on the spatial and temporal distribution patterns of mesozooplankton in the western tropical South Pacific along the 20 °S south visited during austral summer (February–April 2015). By contributing to the interdisciplinary OUTPACE (Oligotrophy to UlTra-oligotrophy PACific Experiment) project (Moutin et al., 2017), the specific aims of this study dedicated to mesozooplankton observations were (1) to document the responses of zooplankton in terms of species diversity, density and biomass along the transect, and (2) to characterize the trophic pathways from primary production to large mesozooplanktonic organisms. Along a West-East transect of 4000 km from New Caledonia to the French Polynesia, 15 short-duration stations (SD-1 to...

Metazooplankton communities in the Ahe atoll lagoon (Tuamotu Archipelago, French Polynesia): Spatiotemporal variations and trophic relationships ArchiMer
Pagano, Marc; Sagarra, Pascual-boi; Champalbert, Gisele; Bouvy, Marc; Dupuy, Christine; Thomas, Yoann; Charpy, Loic.
Metazooplankton abundance, biomass (<80 mu m, 200-500 mu m and >500 mu m) and community structure in the Ahe atoll were studied together with their relationships with environmental factors (temperature, salinity, wind) and trophic factors (phytoplankton, bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates (HNF) and ciliates) during three periods in 2008-2009. Meroplankton, mainly bivalve and gastropod larvae, was dominant. Holoplankton was dominated by copepods, the main species being Oithona spp., Paracalanus parvus, Clausocalanus spp., Corycaeus spp., Acartia fossae and Undinula vulgaris. The results suggest a clear wind influence on the structure and horizontal distribution of the zooplankton communities. The metazooplankton appeared to be controlled mainly...

Nitrogen and phosphorus recycling mediated by copepods in Western Tropical South Pacific ArchiMer
Valdés, Valentina; Carlotti, François; Escribano, Ruben; Donoso, Katty; Pagano, Marc; Molina, Veronica; Fernandez, Camila.
Zooplankton play a key role in the regeneration of nitrogen and phosphorus in the ocean through grazing and metabolism. This study investigates the role of the organic and inorganic nitrogen and phosphorus compounds released by copepods on biogeochemical processes and on the microbial community composition during the OUTPACE cruise (18 February–3 April 2015) at three long duration stations (LD). Two LD stations were located in the Melanesian Archipelago region (MA; LD A and LD B) and one in the South Pacific Gyre (SG; LD C), which represent oligotrophic and ultraoligotrophic regions respectively. At each station, microcosm onboard experiments were performed with locally sampled organisms, comprising a mix of epipelagic copepods fed with their natural food...

Plankton as biological pump for contaminants in marine ecosystems: a transmediterranean approach (Merite Hippocampe cruise, april-mai 2019) ArchiMer
Carlotti, François; Tronczynski, Jacek; Tedetti, Marc; Pagano, Marc; Garnier, Cédric.
Recent research on the bioaccumulation of organic and trace element contaminants along trophic food webs suggests that plankton plays a central role as a 'biological pump' for pollutants. The MERITE-HIPPOCAMPE project (oceanographic cruise in April- May 2019) aims at studying the interactions between plankton and contaminants (metallic, organic plastics) at atmosphere/water/biota interfaces via a North-South trans-Mediterranean approach in contrasted areas (primary production, fishing zones, ecoregions, polluted bays). The target contaminants are on the lists of priority pollutants and substances of Regional Conventions (OSPAR) and EU directives (WFD, MSF). The expected results are to provide a better understanding of the transfer processes of contaminants...

Rapid responses of pristine marine planktonic communities in experimental approach to diuron and naphthalene (Juan de Nova Island, Western Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Bouvy, Marc; Dupuy, Christine; Got, Patrice; Domaizon, Isabelle; Carré, Claire; Pagano, Marc; Debroas, Didier; Roques, Cécile; Leboulanger, Christophe.
Planktonic communities from Juan de Nova lagoon were submitted to a single exposure of diuron or naphthalene in triplicate outdoor 40-L mesocosms for 5 days. The study followed the temporal changes of the assemblages by determining abundances and taxonomic level of microbial (heterotrophic prokaryotes, picocyanobacteria, heterotrophic protists and phytoplankton) and metazooplankton communities. Exposure to both contaminants did not result in significant changes in phytoplankton abundances. Microscopic identification demonstrated the dominance of Bacillariophyta (mostly Chaetoceros tenuissimus) accounting for more than 95% of the microalgae detected in all mesocosms. Using 18S rRNA metabarcoding, temporal changes in the proportion of eukaryotic operational...

Spatial and temporal variability of zooplankton off New Caledonia (Southwestern Pacific) from acoustics and net measurements ArchiMer
Smeti, Houssem; Pagano, Marc; Menkes, Christophe; Lebourges-dhaussy, Anne; Hunt, Brian P. V.; Allain, Valerie; Rodier, Martine; De Boissieu, Florian; Kestenare, Elodie; Sammari, Cherif.
Spatial and temporal distribution of zooplankton off New Caledonia in the eastern Coral Sea was studied during two multidisciplinary cruises in 2011, during the cool and the hot seasons. Acoustic measurements of zooplankton were made using a shipborne acoustic Doppler current profiler (S-ADCP), a scientific echosounder and a Tracor acoustic profiling system (TAPS). Relative backscatter from ADCP was converted to biomass estimates using zooplankton weights from net-samples collected during the cruises. Zooplankton biomass was estimated using four methods: weighing, digital imaging (ZooScan), ADCP and TAPS. Significant correlations were found between the different biomass estimators and between the backscatters of the ADCP and the echosounder. There was a...

Structure and function of epipelagic mesozooplankton and their response to dust deposition events during the spring PEACETIME cruise in the Mediterranean Sea ArchiMer
Feliú, Guillermo; Pagano, Marc; Hidalgo, Pamela; Carlotti, François.
The PEACETIME cruise (May–June 2017) was a basin-scale survey covering the Provencal, Algerian, Tyrrhenian, and Ionian basins during the post-spring bloom period and was dedicated to tracking the impact of Saharan dust deposition events on the Mediterranean Sea pelagic ecosystem. Two such events occurred during this period, and the cruise strategy allowed for the study of the initial phase of the ecosystem response to one dust event in the Algerian Basin (during 5 d at the so-called “FAST long-duration station”) as well as the study of a latter response to another dust event in the Tyrrhenian Basin (by sampling from 5 to 12 d after the deposition). This paper documents the structural and functional patterns of the zooplankton component during this survey,...

The spring mesozooplankton variability and its relationship with hydrobiological structure over year-to-year changes (2003–2013) in the southern Bay of Biscay (Northeast Atlantic) ArchiMer
Dessier, Aurelie; Bustamante, Paco; Chouvelon, Tiphaine; Huret, Martin; Pagano, Marc; Marquis, Elise; Rousseaux, Frederic; Pignon-mussaud, Cecilia; Mornet, Francoise; Breret, Martine; Dupuy, Christine.
Mesozooplankton can be considered the most important secondary producers in marine food webs because they hold an intermediate position between the phytoplankton assemblage and the upper trophic levels. They also are a robust indicator of climatic and hydrological conditions. We conducted an analysis of the interannual variability of the spring mesozooplankton assemblage, as sampled by the PELGAS fisheries survey in the southern part of the Bay of Biscay (Northeast Atlantic Ocean) between 2003 and 2013. We examined hydrology and trophic drivers to explain the variability. Our results revealed that the subsurface temperature, the subsurface salinity, the biomasses of subsurface pico-, nano-, and microphytoplankton, and the copepod assemblage exhibited a...

Trophic relationships between metazooplankton communities and their plankton food sources in the Iles Eparses (Western Indian Ocean) ArchiMer
Dupuy, Christine; Pagano, Marc; Got, Patrice; Domaizon, Isabelle; Chappuis, Alexis; Marchessaux, Guillaume; Bouvy, Marc.
Coral reef and atoll lagoons are among the most diversified marine ecosystems but also the most affected by the combined effects of climate change and human activities. The Iles Eparses (Scattered Islands) in the Western Indian Ocean have been little affected by human pressure and can be considered to be “pristine” ecosystems. Metazooplankton plays a major role in the functioning and productivity of aquatic ecosystems, and this study was undertaken: (i) to determine the spatial abundance, distribution and species composition of metazooplankton, (ii) to assess the effect of metazooplankton grazing on pico- and nanophytoplankton and (iii) to analyze the trophic positions of metazooplankton by using the stable isotope signatures of a wide variety of taxa and...
